The Mariner was designed to replace the legacy UNP Space Patrol fleet which had been transferred to NS but needed replacement. Before the first ship could enter trials NS decided instead to build a development of the
Pentekonter, the
Protector 57A, for the role. Mariner was completed and originally was to become a trials or research ship but after excelling in it's trials NS has decided to build a series fleet of it to supplement the Protector.
