The Quasar 15A was the first of the DDS' "Generation 3" spaceship designs at the dawn of the 22nd century. Along with the
Isometric and
Velocity the Quasar introduced new standards of design and performance way beyond earlier ships. The Quasar was designed as a cruiser and be the pinnacle of the fleet.
When the DDS moved to the heavy destroyer design such as the
Panther the Quasar was considered out-of-date - some were sold to the Raegris and there was a feeling that all might be retired, however the new role of strategic bomber proved to be the perfect fit for the Quasar with it's large weapon carrying capacity.
The survivors of the once much larger Quasar fleet are now the core of the NS bomber force and also have a secondary role as command ships. Three ex-Raegris Quasars joined the fleet in 2125, however the ships will be withdrawn from service between 2128-30.
