The Type 18A is a unique ship in the fleet, while most combat ships are designed to be capable of multi-role operations (even if they prioritise one role) the Type 18A is designed for one reason only: to carry the massive
ZMax super cannon - a weapon more powerful than anything else known in the galaxy. The rationale for the Type 18A is to bring something different and unexpected to a tactical situation, one that an enemy cannot prepare for. A second ship was planned but has now been cancelled.
The ship was originally named Windscorpion but this was changed in 2122.
